This winter has been brutal. Just like other parents of young kids, we’ve experienced relentless bouts of illnesses that continuously made the rounds amongst all family members. To say we deserve a good break is an understatement. With that in mind – and with the holidays so close – Booking with Kids have compiled a list of the best places to travel to this Easter break that are great for exploring with the kids. From sunny Athens to mystical Bali, there’s something for every little wanderer.
Why travel during the Easter break?
With spring in full bloom, Easter is the ideal time for travelling. It’s not too hot, nor too cold: mild weather is often equal to more chilled kids. Additionally, tourist spots aren’t as busy as in the summer months, making the entire trip much less chaotic (and less time standing in queues – we know kids love that). Check out our the top spots picked by Booking with Kids for Easter travel in 2023:
Bali
A tropical paradise, Bali is well known for its vibrant culture and natural beauty, including stunning beaches, lush rainforest, and exotic wildlife. April weather is warm and sunny, perfect for exploring Bali’s wondrous sights with the kids, and without the high-season crowds. You can choose one of the many Bali family-friendly resorts, many of which have their own kids’ club and plenty of activities to choose from. Most resorts have special Easter programmes with activities, ranging from fun egg hunts to delicious Easter brunch. When not too busy participating in the festivities, you can explore The Bali Zoo and the Bird Park. Enjoy a Bali Safari or take a hike through the rainforest. Do not miss out on Bali’s traditional dances – the show in Ubud, featuring excerpts from the Legong and Barong dance forms, is pretty spectacular!
Barcelona
The Med is always a good idea and Barcelona during ‘Semana Santa’ is a feast for the senses. Most parades are held on Good Friday, and places of interest have special programs during Easter. When not immersing yourself in culture, check out the Barcelona Zoo in Park Ciutadella. You should also explore the Tibidabo funfair at Tibidabo Hill, the Magic Fountain and the Barcelona Aquarium. The theme park – PortAventura is only a one hour train ride away from Barcelona and it’s open all week in April. The city can get quite busy during this time, so expect quite a bit of queuing at top attractions. Do try the popular Mona de Pasqua cake, the kids will love it!
The Faroe Islands
Visiting the Faroe Islands during Easter break means making the most of the islands’ unspoiled nature without the crowds. With Spring and its colours slowly appearing, there are plenty of opportunities for lovely hikes, with amazing views of the mountains, cliffs and rugged coastlines. It can still be quite cold during this time though, so do pack wisely! On Easter Monday, families boil and paint eggs and then roll them down the hillside for as long as possible. Everyone eats the eggs once they’re done rolling! Get your free Faroe Islands family travel guide for the best places to visit in the Faroe Islands with the kids.
Athens
Well-known for its rich history and culture, Athens is a great place for an Easter break with the kids. The weather is mild and the entire city comes alive with festivities and processions. Restaurants serve traditional Easter meals such as lamb or goat, red eggs and tsoureki, a sweet bread with a red egg on top. While there, the Acropolis is a must-visit. The ancient site is usually decorated with flowers and candles during Easter. This makes it both an educational and a magical experience for the kids. The National Archaeological Museum, the Athens Zoo, and Sounion, an hour’s drive from Athens, are all worth a visit, too. Rome
Rome is such a short flight away from Malta, and it’s always a good idea to visit with kids. And so we know that Rome is a great destination for families with kids, as there are plenty of activities and attractions to keep everyone entertained. Among the best things that you can do with kids in Rome, Booking with Kids suggest exploring Villa Borghese, tossing a coin and making a wish at Fontana di Trevi, visiting the Colosseum, and the Zoo. Villa Borghese is a beautiful, large park, located in the heart of Rome. This is a great place for a picnic and there is also a playground for kids. Explore the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Kids will love learning about ancient history and seeing the ruins of these iconic landmarks. The Bioparco is a wonderful zoo that features a wide variety of animals.
Whilst in Rome, you can’t miss a trip to the Vatican. Discover a vast collection of art and artifacts, including the famous Sistine Chapel. When in Rome, go on a Gelato Tour. This an incredibly sweet tour for kids. Kids will love trying different flavours of ice-cream, and there are plenty of gelaterias to choose from in Rome. Easter is a fantastic time for travelling with kids. Most places are not overly busy, the weather is mostly mild, and it’s also the perfect break after an often dreary winter. The only thing to look out for is opening times as some sites may be closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and in some places, also Easter Monday. All we have to add apart from that disclaimer is ‘Happy exploring’ during your travels this Easter!
